cpu resources

Hello,

I've been running numerics, and updated gnome to version 0.3.
I'm pretty sure the old gnome took up minimal resources without any
calls to nice.
The new gnome and utils are now getting lots of resources.

For example, typically around 20% cpu resources go to
each of:
gtop, panel, background, gen_util_applet, and myprocess.

I'd like to give myprocess as much of the cpu resources as possible.
Is there an easy way of doing this?

What is the gen_util_applet?
