Problems compiling gnome-libs

I'm having problems compiling the gnome-libs package.  I've 
followed Soren Harward's instructions letter-by-letter.  I'm running 
Slackware 3.5 with kernel v2.0.35.

The autogen.sh script can't seem to find my Imlib.  It has been 
probably installed.  The libraries are visible when I do ldconfig -v, 
/opt/gnome/bin is in my path, etc.  But still, it says that the library 
can't be found.

Any thoughts?
