Compiling Imlib

I'm still trying to compile Imlib-1.8.1, for weeks now...

I successfully installed gtk-1.1.2 and all the most recent Imlib 
support files.  When I run the configure script for Imlib, I'm getting 
this:

gtk-config --version gives me the good version (1.1.2)

/usr/local/bin and /usr/local/lib are in my $PATH and in ld.so.conf.

Any suggestions, PLEASE!!!

I would like to contribute to the Gnome project, probably for 
translating documentations in french, but I must be able to compile 
it before!
