newbie has missing libraries..

I've installed the following files on my RH 5.0 system:

# rpm -Uvh glib-1.0.6-1.i386.rpm gtk+-1.0.6-1.i386.rpm
gtk+-devel-1.0.6-1.i386.rpm

No problems.  I can even run gimp! :)  However when I try to ./configure
any gtk application from source I usually get:

"checking for GTK -version >= 1.0.0... no"

I ran ldconfig but same result.  Any pointers?
