Emacs doesn't have a normal autoconf setup, last I looked.  Expect to
spend a bit of time understanding how it works before adding in
gnome.  (I'd help, but I never really spent the time.)

RMS isn't against a normal autoconf setup, it just wasn't up to the
task, iirc.  So if you make things work nicely, it'll probably be
taken.
