gnome/gtk apps broken after gnome-1.0 install

hello,

I just upgraded from gnome 0.98 to gnome 1.0 and now all of my gtk
programs are dead

gedit startsup but if I do *anything* (click on a toolbar button, etc)
I get a Broken Pipe
other gnome/gtk programs say:

GLib-ERROR **: file gmem.c line 558 (g_mem_chunk_alloc): assertion
failed: (mem_chuck != NULL)
aborting...

how can I fix this?  btw, everything was compiled and not RPMS.. there
were no errors at all with the compilation.
