bit off-topic: managing all the software components...

He, I've got a question for you guys...

I've only recently installed red hat Linux and gnome 1.0 via the rpm
packages.

Now when I want to further install packages (allready did some), I do so
via the source tarball. (also following the egcs / gcc thread on this
list).

Now how do you guys manage what software is installed on your computer?
with rpms, you can do a rpm -qa and get a list including version numbers
of what is installed. This gets lost if you compile from source and
install.
Now I wonder how to best handle that.
Should I manually maintain a list, or should I make my own rpm from the
source tarball, or what?

Any suggestions please?
thanks,

Kurt
