Have you tried
$ locate <file>
to see if you have it?

maybe this helps:

$ export LIBS=-L/usr/local/lib
$ export CFLAGS=-I/usr/local/include
$ rm config.cache
$ ./configure --with-all-the-options-you-used
$ gmake

You probably used ./configure --prefix=/home/gnome and then it
doesn't look for /usr/local things.
