I don't know if this would have worked or not, but when you run into
problems in X-Windows that you can't figure out, try CRTL-ALT-BACKSPACE
instead. That dumps you out of X-Windows... not gracefully as far as
X-Windows is concerned, but at least your O/S won't know or care!
