My panel keeps crashing: iofputs.c

Hi everyone

i can't even run the gnome config tool without crashing panel.  I'm
getting Gdk errors.

Gdk-ERROR **: BadWindow (invalid Window parameter)
  serial 134 error_code 3 request_code 10 minor_code 0

this happens when i click on gnome help, gnome config, or gnome
terminal.  if i run under gdm i get this:

Starting program: /usr/bin/panel 
(no debugging symbols found)...
Program received signal SIGSEGV, Segmentation fault.

iofputs.c:39: No such file or directory.

if you think a backtrace would help i can send it along but what is that
iofputs.c and what's its problem anyway?
