newbie question: how to start GNOME?

Hello,

After installed GNOME1.0 Base Package on my Linux RedHat5.2, I was told to
edit the X startup files. But where should I put such X startup files, and
what name should I save it/them as?

In the GNOME install guide, a sample X startup file using gnome-session
is given as:

#!/bin/bash
   exec gnome-session
## End Sample
