Problems starting gnome (GTK???)

Dear list,
I searched the archives but couldn't find an answer to my question. I
installed gnome (session, panel, control-center,etc) with the apt-get program
from Debian. It automatically updated my GTK libs, etc. So far, I didn't have
any errors with the installation. But since I try to start fvwm2 with gnome, I
get the following error message under ./.xsession-errors:

SESSION_MANAGER=local/King:/tmp/.ICE-unix/539,tcp/King:1027

Gtk-WARNING **: gtk_type_create(): type `GtkCalendarDisplayOptions' already
exists.

** ERROR **: file gnometypes.c: line 30 (gnome_type_init): assertion failed:
(type_id != GTK_TYPE_INVALID)
aborting...

My .xsession file looks like this:

#! /bin/bash
xsetroot -solid slategrey &
xrdb -load $HOME/.Xdefaults
fvwm2 &
exec /usr/bin/gnome-session

It gets as far as screening a grey background and showing the typical
X-pointer but then shuts down. What can be wrong? Any help is welcome. Thanks
a lot...
