While it's obviously not perfect, the goal in GNOME is to use the best
solution for the problem at hand.

You would have to make the determination as to whether it happens to use
one of these "design patterns" (AKA pat answers for people who don't want
to think ;-). If you want to see the .idl files for the various interfaces
that GNOME programs implement, you can install the developer's .rpm's and
look under /usr/share/idl
