gnome-libs install trouble: gnome-gen-mimedb

Greetings,

Trying to build an RPM from the gnome-libs-1.08 tarball gave me the
following error during the install step in gnome-data:

../libgnome/gnome-gen-mimedb /var/tmp/gnome-libs-root/usr/etc/mime-magic

make[2]: *** [install-data-local] Aborted

I went back into the build directory and tried to execute
gnome-gen-mimedb again, but it just gave back "Aborted".

So, I checked out gnome-libs from CVS (4:00 PM EDT), tried 'make dist'
to buld a tarball (to build an rpm), but failed again, this time in
libgnomeui/pixmaps:

make[2]: Entering directory
`/usr/src/redhat/CVS/gnome-libs/libgnomeui/pixmaps'
make[2]: *** No rule to make target `../../tools/convertrgb/convertrgb',
needed by `gnome-stock-imlib.h'.  Stop.

There is of course a perfectly good convertrgb target in
../../tools/convertrgb/Makefile...

So then I got the SRPM, but back to problem 1, gnome-gen-mimedb aborted.

System: LinuxPPC R4 on a StarMax 3000, egcs-1.1.2 (stock, not
PPC-modified), kernel 2.2.5 (with only the glibc-1.99 patch),
autoconf-2.13, automake-1.4, libtool-1.2d.
