Panel goes bye bye when switching desktops

Hi folks,
I noticed last night that when I select a different desktop in the
gnome-pager applet, I lose the panel.  Is this broken?  Luckily, I
remembered the keystrokes to return to desktop 0; I new user would have
to kill his session to get back to normal ( or use the Enlightenment
desktop menus).
