GDM configuration: how to run KDE??

Hopefully I won't start another holy war, here.

I run both Gnome and KDE on my system and currently have no problems using
KDM to start either of the two by making a few choice changes to
/etc/X11/xdm/Xsession.

I want to change to use gdm but when I try to make it start KDE I get
nothing but some screen flicker and back to the gdm page.

I've added a file /etc/X11/gdm/Sessions/KDE and tried a number of tactics:
1) call Xsession passing it the argument 'kde' (which should work
according to how I altered Xsession to handle extra arguments)
2) call /opt/kde/bin/startkde
3) set KDEDIR=/opt/kde and do (2)

None of these work. Does anyone have any good ideas?

Thanks,
-Dave
