new mime types for gmc

What's the correct way to add a new mime type for gmc? I want my SGML
files to be handled by gnuedit (a small script which calls gnudoit for 
XEmacs to edit the file).
 I found a way to edit MIME types, but there seems to no GUI way to
add a MIME type like application/x-sgml.
