I had the same problem (potato too). It's a Debian problem i guess,
symbol in libwrapper.a missing. I can do without tcp wrappers, so i
edited gdm/configure -> "#define HAVE_TCPWRAPPERS 0" and now gdm
compiles and runs fine for me.
Should file a bug report to Debian i though.
