Use xdm instead of gdm. That fixed it for me.

Many message have been posted about the 'slow start' of gnome-session
after reboot. I didn't see any solutions posted, though. Is there one?
One person recommended using xhost in the Xclients (on RH) script, but I
have tried and failed, probably because I didn't do it right (it makes no
difference: E comes up quick - long hiatus - panel + esd - even longer
hiatus - other clients; this happens whenever there is a saved,
non-default session). Thanks in advance,
