Esound and x11amp

I've noticed that alot of you are able to run x11amp through esd. 
esddsp x11amp
This is not working for me I get theses errors 
Unable to reset audio device
Unable to open the audio device
Can any one shed some light on this subject.  I have the newest versions of both esd and x11amp
