0.99.1 problems

Hi,

I have been running 0.30 but saw that 0.99.1 had been released.
I downloaded everthing in the ftp directory and installed it.  However
I could only run gnome-session (or panel for that matter) as root; ie
I had to login as root and have gnome-session & in my .xsession before
it would work.  How can I get this to run without being root?  The FAQ 
doesn't seem to cover this, and the setup instructions in the documentation
do not mention having to run this as suid root (which doesn't seem to work
anyway).

My system:
Redhat 5.2
Afterstep 1.6
