Older UNIXes (Ultrix, e.g.) didn't have it, but all modern ones that I
know of do.  It's not implemented exactly the same way on all of them,
but I think most now do it with ELF (as Linux does).  GNU libtool
accomodates the differences in a portable way, and does a pretty good
job.
