I have the same setup (as far as I can tell...) and got the same
error too. I have all gnome stuff installed in /opt/gnome from CVS
and used the following to compile:

ACLOCAL_FLAGS='-I /opt/gnome/share/aclocal -I /usr/local/share/aclocal'
LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/opt/gnome/lib

$ gmake clean; ./autogen.sh --prefix=/opt/gnome
--with-gtk-prefix=/opt/gnome --with-gnome=/opt/gnome && gmake

No luck ... so I downloaded ORBit-0.3.91.tar.gz from ftp instead. That
one doesn't carry an autogen-script so you just jump on the configure-
script. Good luck!
