one problem with setting the term var i find is that things tend to stuff up,
like setting TERM to xterm-debian (which i assume is the one debian wants us
to use, xterm-xfree86 results in the same thing and i dont have an
xterm-color), is that although things look fine, they dont get cleared, so as
the screen scrolls, things tend to pile up on each other, etc.

maybe someone out there has a faq on terminfo+x-terminals?
