Only one application may use the sound card at a time. Esd helps
with that limitation by playing sounds at the request of other
programs; even more than one at the same time, as needed.

Many non-esd-native audio apps work with esd via the esddsp
wrapper script. e.g.:
	esddsp xanim
	esddsp rvplayer
	esddsp x11amp

For those programs that do not (e.g. quake):
	esdctl off ; quake ; esdctl on ;

You may also run esd in autosuspend mode, to have it release
the sound card when it's not playing anything:
	esd -as 1

The 1 in the line above indicates a one second timeout.
