Help! Failed dependencies in Redhat 5.2 ...

Please help me!

I'm trying to install the glib-1.1.13-1.i386.rpm file included with
the 0.99.3 version of GNOME I downloaded from one of the mirror sites.
Here's what my system echoes to the screen when I try to install it:

--------------------------------------------------------------------

[root@curly i386]# rpm -Uvh glib-1.1.13-1.i386.rpm
failed dependencies:
        glib = 1.0.6 is needed by gtk+-1.0.6-3
        libglib.so.1 is needed by AfterStep-APPS-1.5-0.3
        libglib.so.1 is needed by control-panel-3.7-7
        libglib.so.1 is needed by gecko-1.6-0
        libglib.so.1 is needed by gimp-1.0.1-2
        libglib.so.1 is needed by gnome-libs-0.20-3
        libglib.so.1 is needed by gnome-linuxconf-0.14-4rh
        libglib.so.1 is needed by usermode-1.4.3-1
        libglib.so.1 is needed by usernet-1.0.8-1

--------------------------------------------------------------------

1. Do the failed dependencies imply that I have to use the
--force switch in rpm? (or any other switches besides U,v,h?)
2. If I do use the --force switch, will this somehow break my system,
such that I won't be able to go back to using AfterStep or FVWM2
   in the future?

Thanks in advance,
Tom
