The X specs strongly imply that the session manager and the window manager
are separate programs (for example, the ICCCM specifies that the window
manager should connect to the session manager). Then you can mix-and-match
them. It's just nicer and more modular.

I guess nothing really breaks if the window manager is the session
manager, as long as you don't try to use a different session manager
simultaneously.
