Problems with libintl.so.1

I installed the gnome stuff from packages and everything's in place.  However
when I go to start gnome-session (or ANY gnome app for that matter)
 I get a message:
 smw @ pixel % gnome-session
gnome-session: can't load library 'libintl.so.1'
Upon investigation I find that I have libintl.a but NOT libintl.so.1.  Does
anyone
know where I can get this lib?
