Mixer Applet Not Working - gmix works (I think)

I've configured the onboard cs4232 and it seems to be working. I can
play .au and .wav files and the cd plays fine. But the mixer applet
stopped working - the slider is max'd out and can't be moved. I ran gmix
and all the controls seem to work (and the card is properly identified)
except there is no volume control.

Does this make sense? I can provide additional information if required.
