my first reaction was that this is probably a problem like most people
have upon first using a PIM.  we expect the alarm to go off even when
the program isn't running.

any thoughts on writing a panel applet that executes the alarms and can
launch the PIM w/out taking up the memory and CPU cycles of the PIM
itself?
just a thought.
