I get those same options as a regular user, if I select 'halt' it prompts me for a (root) password, but then just returns to the gdb prompt (it doesn't work, but the intent seems to be obvious) - I was under the impression this was some sort of redhat code patch...?

> The problem is that your friend log'ed in as root (which is A Bad ThingTM). Whenever you run gnome-panel as root it gives you those options... You don't want them (it would require you to login as root). A better option would be to include a shutdown button on the login prompt.
