gmc problems

i had a running gmc and all of a sudden it won't even start anymore.
it draws the icons in the upper left hand corner and as soon as they 
are finished, they vanish and gmc has a segmentation fault.

i had mc 4.5.30 installed and installed ..33 right over it (tar files)
is that the problem?

please help if you have an idea
