Re: gnome doesn't start anymore



I had the same problem.  I never did figure out how to fix it in Gnome.
Here's what I did:

Step 1: Backup /etc/inittab
Step 2: Edit /etc/inittab (as root) find the following line:
id:5:initdefault:
Step 3: Change the 5 to a 3. Be careful not to change ANYTHING else. Editing
the inittab file is something to not be taken lightly. Errors in the file
can cause horrific problems.
Step 4: Save /etc/inittab
Step 5: Reboot.

This lets you boot to the normal console screen where my login worked fine.
Go figure.
