It still crashes when I start it up.

that's the backtrace.

it's a little strange but it won't crash if it starts up in a directory
that it doesn't have read permision.  but will crash as soon as a
directory to which it has read permision is entered.  I am using 

gtk 1.2
gnome 1.0
gmc 4.5.23
