autogen.sh calls autoconf and family.  his underlying problems are programs
that aren't current.

to the original poster, if you are using redhat, i recommend you stick with
rpms.  if you still wish to do it by hand, i'm overhauling the generic tgz
howto for gnome.  it's a document in work, but it's mostly usable.
