Is the .xsession file executable (ie. if you run "chmod a+x ~/.xsession"
does it make any difference)?

If you know a little shell, you can see exactly what xdm does when you
log in by reading /etc/X11/xdm/Xsession.  From that file, it executes the
first file that is found and executable in this list:
  ~/.xsession, ~/.Xclients, /etc/X11/xinit/Xclients
