I haven't tried this myself but someone (It may have been Gleef) suggested
that you run gnome-panel but but not run gnome-session. (In your .xinitrc
file or manually as you choose.)
Theory: I haven't experimented with this but hitting ctrl-alt-backspace
might get you out Gnome (and your windowmanager without saving the settings.)
