Thanks for the email. It is always nice when someone listens.
That didn't do the trick through. It is a straight workstation install of
Redhat 5.2 and Gnome 1.0 downloaded straight from gnome.org, following their
directions. I copied the rpms to the computer and installed from the 'root'
login. I am trying to use Gnome from a user login and not set it system
wide, yet. Then I logged in as the user and created the .Xclients file with
that line. When I type 'startx' I get ('jernast' is my username)
/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/xinit/xinitc: /home/jernast/.Xclients cannot execute:
Permission denied
waiting for xserver to shutdown
I created a '.xinitrc' with
panel &
background-properties --init &
screensaver-perties --init &
mouse-properites --init &
exec enlightenment &
exec gnome-session
and now it seems to run fine. I found that suggestion when surfing through
all the old postings. I am assuming this just needs to be added to the
instructions installing Gnome on Redhat 5.2.

step by step install
install the rpms
in the .Xclients file there should be 1 line
exec gnome-session
that should do it. :)
