Thanks, that works great.   It would be nice if there were an option in the
Window Maker configuration program to generate this behavior.

With this tweak Gnome and Window Maker get along just fine.   There are a few
other things that could use some attention (like window placement and not
resizing over or under the panel).  But for the most part they work very well
together.
