Installation Problems with Panel/libpng

Hi folks,

I'm new to Gnome but nevertheless very excited about it. However,
after compiling .tgz for the whole sunday (egcs on SuSe 6.0) I
encountered a problem when I start X:

It complains the there is an error when loading a shared library.
.../libpng.so.2 has an undefined symbol inflateInit_

Do I have to upgrade the libpng library (libpng.so.2 is a symlink to
libpng.so.2.1.0)?

Excuse me if this question is OT and please point me to a better
forum.
