cant start gnome

When I try to start gnome I get a message "Gtk-Warning **: cannot open
display. Also, after I installed the rpms, usernet won't work anymore
because it can no longer find libgtk.so.1 and libgdk.so.1. Because of this
I am having to use Windows to send this mail :(.
Can anyone explain what might be wrong?
