can't compile gn-libs 1.0.4

I'm trying to rebuild gnome on a standard rh 5.2 (gcc 2.7.3, egcs1.0.3) but
apparently can't make gnome-libs. I installed all the possible libraries I 
can think of. I compiled several packages with no problem: esound freetype 
fnlib E glib, etc.

Gnome-libs ends make with a "cc1 error" on one of the files from the
libgnomeui subdir (not always the same file). I get the same problem with
gnome-libs 1.0.3. Actually, I am also having trouble compiling gtk+ (glib
compiles OK, otoh). Thank you for any help,
