There are a couple of ways that you can do this.  I've heard that you
can have both gtk 1.1 and gtk 1.0 installed at the same time, as long as
you only have one of the devel rpms installed.  The suggestion I saw was
to rpm -i the gtk-1.1.*.rpm, and to rpm -Uvh gtk-1.1.*-devel.rpm.  I
haven't tried this myself, though.

If you download the source and build it to go under /opt or something
like that, you can have as many versions as you like, as long as you
modify your path before building, and your LD_LIBRARY_PATH variable
before running.  You can set up a shell script that sets the
LD_LIBRARY_PATH and then runs the application.  I'm doing this at home,
and it works reasonably well.

Or you can download the developers release of gimp, which seems pretty
stable to me, and has a few nice features.
