Window manager selection seems to be a little iffy in gnome-core 1.0.3.
Try a gnome-core snapshot, the code has been updated since then.

Right, if you set WINDOW_MANAGER to what you want, gnome-session will run
that window manager.  This won't work in gnome-core 1.0.3, however (hence
my "since the last release" comment).

Also, the other poster's point is valid.  You are far safest having the
only line in your .xinitrc, .Xclient or .xsession (whichever you use) be
"exec gnome-session".  Assuming everything is configured happily,
gnome-session will run everything else for you.
