balsa problems

just installed balsa 0.4.9 and I can't get it to run properly.

It goes as far as asking me what the paths should be for inbox, outbox and
trash, but when I say "finish" it says the path I gave it for my outbox is
invalid and would I like to create it. I say yes and the program crashes
with this in my terminal window:
Gdk-ERROR **: BadMatch (invalid parameter attributes)

aborting...
