window placement and wm startup

I've been using Jay Painter's (pseudo?) GNOME-compliant version of fvwm2
for a while now, and I prefer active window placement. However, upon
the startup of a GNOME session I'd like the windows to place themselves
so I don't have to babysit the startup. Should/does GNOME use a wm hint
to override active placement when it restarts apps at startup? Such a
hint is clearly used by e.g. Netscape. And so sorry if "hint" is the
wrong word. If there is such a thing as this in place already, I wonder
why it doesn't work with fvwm.
