gnome-libs-1.0.9 compiling errors

hello, there,

this might be a stupid question. I have tried
all sorts of means, but still can't get 
gnome-libs-1.0.9 compiled properly. The problem
appears to be in the subdirectory "libgnorb",
where gmake complains about an unknown file:
 
ld32: FATAL 9: I/O error (-lgcc): No such file or directory  

I also had the same problem with gnome-libs-1.0.1~1.0.8.
Since this is the first time I try to install gnome, I have
no clue what might be going on here. Could this be due to
some bug in the "configure" file?

Any suggestion is greatly appreciated!


FYI, I'm running IRIX6.5 on an SGI. The other components that
I compiled before this were,
        freetype
        audiofile
        esound
        glib1.2.3
        gtk+1.2.3
        imlib1.9.4
        gtk-engines0.5
        ORbit
	libgtop-1.0.1
        
all these seemed to be fine.
