Mixing CVS and stable

Since I've just discovered that our university computers have both cvs and a ZIP
drive, I've decided to head back onto the CVS branch of GNOME.

The problem is, that I want to still be able to develop applications using the
stable branch, but have my desktop to be running the CVS versions.
What is the best way to do this? Is installing to a different directory enough
to ensure that nothing gets confused?
