bug in gnome-terminal w/VIM

There seems to be something wierd with gnome-terminal. If I pull up a
gnome-terminal, and then go into vim (version 5.4n BETA) and then try
to input a "\" character, I get a weird ansi character, looks something
like this:

    \/
    ---
    ---
     |

forgot what it's called. It doesn't show up in xterm. If I shift it, I
get the proper | symbol. Any clue on whats going on here?
