making gnome-core-1.0.54 is painful

Building gnome-core-1.0.54, I needed to specify --with-gnome-libs and
--with-gnome-includes (in addition to --prefix). It seems
most of the autoconf stuff works if I just specify --prefix.
Also -L/usr/lib is prominent in the build...since this is the default,
it can (should?) be discarded.
